The King Lear Prizes have launched to encourage ordinary people, who have never been published before and are not professional writers, musicians or artists, to create new works of literature, poetry, music and art during the time they are quarantined.
King Lear Prize Categories
Initial prize categories are open to those who are at least 70 years old, given that they have been asked by the UK Government to stay at home and implement social distancing measures,
Short story
- 2,000 to 10,000 words

I seek clarification on the rules. I am 86, and wish to enter in two categories, poetry and drama. My profession was as a National Athletics Coach, but since 1978 I have been a freelance writer ( three novels, 1981-1985, one self-published 2009) and lecturer. I began to write plays at 70, but mainly as readings for charity, and only one has seen public performance, back in 2012. I therefore feel that it would be difficult to classify me as a professional dramatist. In contrast, my poetic entry will be the first poem that I have ever written.
