Soho Theatre Writers Lab inviting applications (age 16-26)

The Soho Theatre has played a unique and award-winning role in the development of new writing in Britain for more than 40 years.  If you’re 16-26 years old, the Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab gives you the chance to develop and refine your writing voice.

About the course:  The Writers’ Lab 2013-14 will run from October 2013 to June 2014.  Meeting once a month, on Monday evenings through the academic year, each Lab session gives you support, inspiration and guidance from our course leaders and members of Soho’s Artistic Team. Throughout the year guest practitioners host one-off sessions and participants are regularly invited to attend shows at discounted rates. The course also provides the perfect opportunity to meet other emerging writers to share, exchange and discuss ideas.  At the end of the academic year they encourage writers to submit a full length play to the Soho Young Writers’ Award.

What you pay:  The cost to participate is £100.  Bursaries are available to young people/families who receive Job Seeker’s Allowance or income support.

What to submit:  The application form (available on their website) requires writers to provide answers to the following questions:

  • What interests you about the Writers’ Lab course?
  •  Have you been involved in anything at Soho before or seen any shows here? If you’re new to Soho, tell us about any shows you’ve seen elsewhere which you’ve enjoyed.
  •  Why do you write/want to learn about playwriting?
  • Provide a one page sample of your writing.  (This could be in the form of a script, poetry, or short story)

How to apply:  To apply for the course simply download the application form and email your completed copy to jules@sohotheatre.com, with the subject ‘Writers’ Lab 2013’. For more information, get in touch with Jules here or call 0207 478 0113.

Deadline: 23 August 2013 at 2pm.

The bi-annual Verity Bargate Award was due to open again in 2013 but all had been quiet from the Soho Theatre…until now!

The Soho Theatre has announced they will indeed be running the award, which will be having its 30th anniversary, and will be including regional theatres as partners in assessing submissions and providing readings to shortlisted plays.

Key details are still under wraps – including submission opening and deadline dates and the nature of the award (which normally includes a cash prize).  However, we’ll keep you posted on more details when they’re available.
