Our weekly pick of the week’s writing opportunities.

Opportunities: Our Pick of the Week – Little Pieces of Gold open for submissions of 10 minute plays

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Little Pieces of Gold open for submissions of 10 minute plays

Description: Little Pieces of Gold was set up in 2010 by Artistic Director Suzette Coon, and since then has produced the plays of over 100 playwrights at leading new writing venues.  They are currently seeking 10 minute plays for their upcoming showcase, to accompany Theatre503’s production of Sarah Hehir’s Child Z.

So, what’s so great about it?  Little Pieces of Gold has a great reputation for quality.  While writers come from a range of backgrounds, many have won awards or had attachments or productions, and there’s a sense of excitement and ‘buzz’ around the emerging playwrights they showcase.  The company also works to build relationships with writers, connecting them with directors, introducing them to literary agents, and even facilitating long-term creative collaboration.  (For instance, Sarah Hehir worked with Little Pieces of Gold on a short play and in development workshops for Child Z prior to this production.)  So if you’re selected, it’s a great way not only to get your work seen, but also to build links with other emerging practitioners in the new writing scene.  There’s two weeks until the deadline on 27 April, so better get writing!

Opportunities: Our Pick of the Week – Etch seeking submissions for Scratch Night #6 at the Peckham Pelican

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Etch seeking submissions for Scratch Night #6 at the Peckham Pelican

Description: Etch is a new writing space which aims to discover, nurture and support new writing in theatre whilst encouraging collaboration amongst emerging artists. At the moment, they’re accepting submissions for their monthly scratch night at the Peckham Pelican and they are looking for 5-15 minute scripts that the writer considers to still be in development.

So, what’s so great about it? Well, firstly, winners get their work performed in London, a professional director to work with and help with casting. The event has been running for a while and they say it consistently attracts audiences of over 150 – in the past this has included creative staff from the RSC, Royal Court and The Young Vic. We think it sounds like a great way to get your work out there and make some new contacts at the same time. They’re only looking for 5-15 minute pieces of work that is still in development so we reckon you’ve got just enough time to pull something together before the deadline on 17 April.
