Eurodram 2017 Competition for English Translations of contemporary European plays

Eurodram is currently running a competition, seeking English translations of contemporary European plays. Eurodram is a European theatre translation network covering European, Mediterranean and Central Asian languages. The network is organised into roughly 30 language-based committees.

Eurodram’s main objective is promote contemporary plays from across the wider European area to theatre professionals and theatre audiences. The plays are selected through two biennial competitions.

The selected plays will receive rehearsed readings in London during 2017.

What to submit:  For the 2017 competition, the English language committee will select three three English translations of contemporary plays originally written in a language other than English. Translations of contemporary European stage plays originally written in languages from the wider European area (Europe, Central Asia and the Mediterranean Area) may be submitted for consideration.

The following guidelines apply:

  • Scripts can be submitted by translators, playwrights, publishers and agents.
  • Playwrights can also be the translators of their own plays.
  • Scripts must be full-length stage plays (over 60 mins).
  • Scripts must be submitted anonymously – i.e. the playwright’s/translator’s name must not appear on any page of the script.
  • Entries must be submitted according to the submission guidelines.
  • Translations of contemporary European stage plays originally written in languages from the wider European area (Europe, Central Asia and the Mediterranean Area) are eligible.
  • Translations must be of stage plays that are currently unpublished and unproduced in the English language.
  • While the translations cannot have already premiered in an English speaking theatre, it is permissible for the translations to have previously had rehearsed readings or workshop performances in English.
  • The original stage play must be a recent play. Plays that premiered or were published in their original language before the year 2000 are not eligible.
  • Plays do not have to have premiered or have been published yet in their original language in order to be eligible.

How to apply:  Scripts must meet the following formatting guidelines.

  • Scripts must be submitted anonymously – i.e. the playwright’s/translator’s name must not appear on any page of the script.
  • The first page of the script should state the play’s title only.
  • The filename must contain the play’s title.
  • The script should include a brief character list after the title page.
  • Scripts must be page numbered.
  • Scripts must be submitted as pdfs.
  • Be accompanied by a submission form.
