MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins, the Bush Theatre, Writers at Work Productions and Oberon Books launch new competition series for students.
The new MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins, the Bush Theatre, Writers at Work Productions and Oberon Books have announced that they are launching a new competition series for student writers at schools and Universities across the UK.
The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting will be the first in a series of competitions designed to share the best dramatic writing training in the UK with students and teachers in schools and Universities in the UK.
The series will launch at a launch event on December 16th at 7pm at Central Saint Martins – free tickets can be booked at www.platform-theatre.com
Following the launch event, students and teachers at schools and Universities across the UK can follow lesson plans to write a play from January to March 2016.
Lesson plans will be written by some of the UK’s leading playwriting experts including Steve Winter, co-founder of the Old Vic New Voices 24 Hour Plays and Director of the Kevin Spacey Foundation, Rob Drummer, the Bush Theatre’s Associate Dramaturg, John Yorke, creator of the BBC Writers Academy and author of the best selling book Into the Woods, and Ola Animashawun, founder of the Royal Court Theatre’s young writers’ programme.
At the end of the project, students can submit their work from the competition, with 5 student winners selected to attend a bootcamp on playwriting at Central Saint Martins and to see their work published by Oberon Books.
The competition series builds on research into dramatic writing training by the new MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins over the last two years (www.theyearofexperimentation.wordpress.com and www.theyearofexperimentationparttwo.wordpress.com) which revealed that it is often difficult for students and teachers to have access to the best dramatic writing training in the UK.
Jennifer Tuckett, Course Leader for MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins said: “The Student Guide to Writing is a new series designed to provide access to the best dramatic writing training in the UK for students and their teachers at schools and Universities across the UK. Teachers can use the lesson plans in classes or students can follow the lesson plans on their own. The winning student work will be published along with the lessons in a book published by Oberon Books as a permanent legacy of the project. Our research over the last two years (www.theyearofexperimentation.wordpress.com and www.theyearofexperimentationparttwo.wordpress.com) has shown it is often difficult for students and teachers to gain access to the best possible dramatic writing training coming out of the industry and lesson plans and we hope this new competition series will address that by providing step by step guidance by the best dramatic writing trainers in the UK.”
