Sheer Drop running Playwriting Workshop (£30)

Playwriting Workshop with Sheer Drop
Saturday 20th June 2015 from 10am-6pm
6 Frederick’s Place, EC2R 8BT
(very close to Bank Underground Station)

Got an idea for a play but not sure where to start? Working on a new play and looking for inspiration? Want to step up from writing short plays to tackling a full-length piece? Or want to boost your understanding of playwriting and discover new approaches and techniques?

Sheer Drop are running a one-day workshop, perfect for aspiring playwrights, and also suitable for actors-who-write, directors of new writing or anyone interested in how plays are created.

The workshop will provide an overview of the key elements of playwriting: story structure; how scenes work; character and dialogue; themes; stagecraft and more.  You will be introduced to practical exercises to encourage writing, learn how to turn your ideas into dramatic action and to approach redrafting a play, and get tips on the various opportunities for staging your work. For those with a specific idea for a play, the workshop will include the opportunity to get one-to-one advice on how to move it forward.

As a company Sheer Drop specialises in developing and producing writer’s first plays. Of the 10 plays they have produced since 2010, 7 have been the writer’s first play.

The workshop will be lead by Tom Latter, who has 6 years experience working on new plays by early-career playwrights of all ages. He is co-Artistic Director of Sheer Drop, and is a Senior Reader and Literary Coordinator (Projects) at award-winning new writing venue Theatre503. His work there includes reading script submissions, running workshops, dramaturgy and directing on new plays, and curating Rapid Write Response nights, which have seen dozens of writers stage work in front of audiences for the first time. He has taught playwriting for students and community groups.

Fee: £30 per person
