Kenyon Institute offering week-long intensive for writers (Ohio, USA; $2,000 fee)

The Kenyon Institute is offering an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring and working playwrights:  immerse yourself in an intensive seminar-based workshop led by creative teams and commissioned playwrights from three leading international theatres – Playwright Horizons, La Jolla Playhouse and Paines Plough.

This week-long intensive runs from 7-13 June 2015.

Cost:  The cost of the Playwrights Conference is $2,000 per person, which includes tuition for the Playwrights Conference course and all instructional materials, a private room, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in Peirce Hall, and gatherings and receptions.

Discounts are available for individuals sharing a double room (two twin beds). Please consult the registration form for details. If you are a local resident who does not need housing and meals, or if you choose to make your own housing arrangements at the Kenyon Inn, Gambier House, or other location, you may purchase a tuition-only package for $1,500.

The Conference is committed to open access to its programs for talented playwrights, and a limited number of full and partial scholarships are available.  For more information about scholarships, please consult the Financial Aid section of their Registration page, or contact Institute director Sarah Kahrl at kahrls@kenyon.edu with questions.

What to submit:  Writers are required to submit the following:

  • A paragraph (no more than 250 words) about why you are applying to this workshop and what you hope to take away from it.
  • A sample scene of no more than 5 pages. If you are planning to workshop a particular play at the conference, your sample must be from that play.
  • A biography (no more than 250 words).

After you have been accepted, if you plan to workshop a particular play, we ask that you submit the play to us by May 15 so your instructor can read it before the conference. Instructions for submitting your play will accompany your acceptance message.

How to apply:  Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning November 1, 2014, including a deposit of $500. You are asked to submit a short writing sample with your application. The balance of your tuition is due on May 15, 2015. If your application is not accepted, your deposit will be immediately refunded.

Deadline:  None posted, however registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
