Part of the Grid July Workshops for Writers

Part of the Grid is Part of the Main’s programme of affordable theatre tech, design and producing workshops. With the theatre industry on pause, they have  decided to offer affordable Zoom workshops designed to provide artists with opportunities to train and create. They have launched 19 new online courses for July, from the greatest hits to new offerings – all at low cost for emerging artists. They are also offering 20 bursary spaces for Black artists on a first come, first served basis – details of this can be found here.

Here is a run down of their writer specific workshops for July:

How to Create a Play from a Historical Provocation | July 16, 23, 30, 3-5 PM

Over 3 weeks, participants will begin work on a play inspired by an event from history and present approx 10 minutes, as well as have a clear sense of how to continue developing their work. Led by Sasha Wilson of Out of the Forest Theatre

So You Want To Make Political Theatre | July 21, 10AM – 12 PM

Join us for an introductory workshop on political theatre, its impact on Eastern Europe, and discussions on how neo-liberal politics in Britain are stopping this type of work from existing in the mainstream.  This workshop will place over Zoom and is led by Nastazja Somers.

Creating Verbatim Theatre | July 28, 2-4 PM
Creating verbatim theatre is an excellent way to dramatize real lives and events for theatre audiences. In this workshop, we cover the daunting task of creating a theatrical structure around interviews and other documented media while remaining respectful and unbiased to the interviewed participants. Led by Emily Aboud, who’s debut play SPLINTERED was an award-winning verbatim play based on interviews with queer womxn from Trinidad & Tobago.
Script Reading for Theatre | July 29, 2-4 PM
In this practical workshop, theatre-makers Aida Rocci and Antonia Georgieva will look into different types of script reading techniques and tips for writing a dramaturgical report for institutions, producers, and writing awards/festivals. They will also lead practically participants through the process of reading a script and writing a report for a short play. This workshop is particularly suitable for dramaturgs, directors, and anyone else interested in script reading for theatre.
