Manchester International Festival workshop on playwriting competitions

Brush Stroke Order has partnered with Manchester International Festival to deliver a 2 hour online workshop de-mystifying the world of playwriting competitions for writers who are ready to submit their work to theatres, competitions and writer development schemes.

The workshop will be led by Naomi Sumner Chan who has worked as a freelance script reader for a number of local , national and international playwriting competitions including Theatre 503 Playwriting Award, Papatango Prize, Manchester 24:7 Theatre Festival and Greater Manchester Fringe Best New Play Award. She also works as a script reader for The National Theatre, Sheffield Theatres and The Royal Exchange Theatre reading unsolicited script submissions.

Participants will have the opportunity to find out more about different playwriting competitions and opportunities. They will also gain an insight into what happens once their script arrives on a readers desk/in their inbox. While acknowledging that plays are meant to be SEEN not read, Naomi will guide participants through the following questions –

  • What are script readers looking for in a new play
  • What are the common mistakes to avoid
  • How do I know if a competition is right for me/my play?
  • Who judges these competitions and HOW are the winners chosen?
  • What are the advantages of entering a competition even if you don’t win

This workshop is suitable for playwrights of all levels of experience who feel ready to share their work with the world.
