Mikrom Theatre Company Writers’ Scheme open for applications

The Mikron Theatre Company are the leading theatre company that tours the inland waterways of Britain by narrowboat. Their talented casts of four (always two women and two men) have at least one instrument and strong singing capabilities. They also comprise their own stage management team so sets, props and costume have to be easy to carry and compact enough to travel onboard the boat. Lighting is basic with no effects, changes or blackouts. Music is integral to everything they do and is always and only ever live.

The Mikron Theatre Writers’ Scheme was set up in 2014 to widen their pool of writing talent in order to meet the specific demands of the theatre company.

The scheme is unpaid but travel expenses to Marsden, West Yorkshire will be covered (standard class off-peak rail fare). Participation in the scheme places you on a shortlist for fully paid commission and offers a development opportunity.

  • Briefing at their base including meeting the team including their composer/lyricist
  • A short task with feedback from which a shortlist of candidates will be drawn up
  • Shortlisted candidates are set a development task to see how you respond to notes
  • Half-day workshop with actors
  • Final exercise
  • Final feedback
  • Commission offer for successful candidates
