As part of Southwark Council’s Black History Month celebrations in October 2019, Southwark Playhouse is recruiting two writers to lead on an exciting creative writing project with young people in our community.
Each working with a primary school class in Elephant and Castle, the writers will lead six weekly workshops. These will focus on the basic skills of writing for the stage, with the aim being that at the end of the process the students will have written their own short (or ‘micro’) plays.
Southwark Council’s theme for BHM 2018 is “70 years on from the docking of the Empire Windrush: the continuing story told through creative media”, and so students’ plays will respond to this theme.
The plays will then be performed at Southwark Playhouse by professional actors as staged readings, in front of the students, an invited audience, and the general public.
They are looking for two writers to lead on this project, who have experience of working with young people, and leading workshops on writing for the stage. We would particularly be interested in hearing from writers from BAME backgrounds, or who have specific understanding of Windrush/ migration from the Caribbean.
Workshops will take place weekly between early September and mid-October, with the final performances on Thursday 18 October. Writers will also be expected to edit the students’ scripts for performance, in conjunction with the director.
