Opportunities – Pick of the Week: Papatango Resident Playwright 2017 (£2000 seed commission)

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Papatango Resident Playwright 2017 (£2000 seed commission)

Description: The search for Papatango’s 2017 Resident Playwright begins. The residency provides a £2000 seed commission, one-to-one dramaturgy, and script development workshops with professional actors to complete a brilliant new play, with an option for a full production by Papatango.

What’s so great about it? We think this is an amazing opportunity for a playwright to develop their work with the brilliant, and highly commended theatre company, Papatango. Their first resident playwright,  May Sumbwanyambe, had his play published and produced at the Arcola (to rave reviews, no less!), he then went on to win the Alfred Fagon Audience Award in a ceremony at the National Theatre.

The chosen writer will get a £2000 seed commission and plenty of dramaturgical support in developing their play, with an option for full production by Papatango. Sounds good? Well, to apply, you have to send in a cover letter and two 10-page samples of your work and like all Papatango opportunities, your application must be anonymous. Please note: applications will be accepted between 22 May 2017- 1 June 2017; we just wanted to give you plenty of time to put your application together!

Read the full details here.

Please note, we’ve posted this for your convenience and we’re not affiliated with the organisers of the opportunity.

Three opportunities with Alphabetti Theatre and rolling deadlines

Alphabetti Theatre is offering three opportunities with rolling deadlines.

Alphabetti create, produce and programme original work across the performing arts. They have been running venues and developing writers since 2012. They are moving to a new long-term home in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2017 – a space to experiment, evolve and discover excellence.

Opportunity 1 – Alphabetti WriteBack

Are you a writer who wants to make theatre that is accessible and relatable? Do you have an idea for a new short play that can be produced with no more than two actors, and minimal set? Then you could be part of Alphabetti Theatre’s regular script-in-hand performance night – WriteBack.

WriteBack is an opportunity for theatre writers and directors to collaborate on a new piece of theatre.

What to submit: Up to 15 pages of script for consideration. Please also include a line or two in your email about why you would like your piece to be performed at WriteBack.

Submissions are open all year round for four WriteBack shows,  featuring five plays each.

This is how it works:

  • Submissions are read and picked by the reading team
  • Over a chat, read through and cup of tea the writers and directors form wonderful new partnerships
  • Alphabetti give these partnerships access to rehearsal space and dramaturgical support
  • The show is performed (usually to a full house)
  • All proceeds are split for a profit-share between performers, directors and writers

How to apply: Send an original short script for consideration, to literary manager, Ben Dickenson: ben@alphabettitheatre.co.uk

Opportunity 2 – Alphabetti Soup commissions

Are you a writer who wants to make theatre that is accessible and relatable? Can you create an original short play, with a compelling and entertaining story, for no more than two actors, and minimal set?

Alphabetti commission up to twelve 10-20 minute plays for their regular mixed arts variety night – Alphabetti Soup. This runs almost every month, so they consider writers and scripts all year round.

You will receive dramaturgical support, a full professional production and a showcase of your work.

What to submit/how to apply: Send an original short script, or an example of your work with a proposal for a new 15min play, to literary manager, Ben Dickenson: ben@alphabettitheatre.co.uk

Opportunity 3 – Alphabetti Write Longer

Are you a writer who wants to make theatre that is accessible and relatable? Do you have a one act play with a strong story, small cast and that can work in a studio production? Are you writing one now? Is it just begging to be seen by an audience?

Write Longer is a development opportunity for emerging and established writers. Alphabetti Theatre take three or four writers a year, help them develop their scripts, provide a company of directors, rehearsal space and dramaturgical support.

They then show the play for one night, followed by a Q&A feedback session to help with future development.

What to submit/How to apply: send your completed one act play (maximum 75minutes), or your work in progress and an outline of the finished play, to literary manager, Ben Dickenson: ben@alphabettitheatre.co.uk

Threadbare Theatre is launching its playwriting competition and is looking for a play set in a pub.

Threadbare says: “We love working on new writing and on plays that fit our space perfectly.

“We are now launching a playwriting competition to find a brand new play that we will stage in the upstairs bar of The Crown Inn, Oxted.

“We are accepting scripts for production in our Autumn 2017/2018 season on the theme “The local”.

Eligibility:  The competition is open to anyone.

What to submit:

  • Scripts from 30 mins–2 hours. Threadbare says if they find 2 good shorter plays they will combine them into one evening’s entertainment

  • At least one scene (we will accept full or partially complete scripts)
  • Character/Casting breakdown – Maximum 3 actors

Leytonstone Itch seeks 5-10 minute play for summer festival (£50 prize)

The Leytonstone Itch are looking for writers (ideally from East London) to get involved in its upcoming summer event – the East Not East Festival,  on 15 July in Wanstead Park www.eastnoteastfestival.com.

LI says: “We will be managing our own tent and we’re looking forward to scratching our biggest ever Itch.

“The Itch would be nothing without the incredible work writers have generously submitted to be experimented with, discussed and enjoyed.

“Our ‘Blindly Cast Readings’ are the highlight of our evenings and we would like to take them further at our summer festival.

“We are looking to commission one writer to create a 5-10 minute piece specifically for the event. The stimulus is: Don’t Give Up Your Day Job! Is Art Really Necessary?”

What to submit: LI says: “Just send us a short outline (up to 200 words) of the sort of play you might write and why. We will then select one of these applications and give you til the end of June to write the full piece. We will handpick our best readers, and give them a day’s rehearsal before performing and filming the play at East Not East. Our chosen writer will also receive a £50 donation as a thank-you for the piece.”
