Ovalhouse Drama Company seeking writer to write for 18-25 year olds (paid)

Ovalhouse Drama Company group are looking for a writer to participate in an open and collaborative writing process for their next project January – April 2015.

Drama Company was established five years ago in association with Ovalhouse and The Co-operative Foundation. This year’s group of 16 artists and performers aged 18-25 will use devising, performance and writing techniques to create a new piece of work that challenges the negative perceptions of young people. Working alongside director, Phil McCormack, whose previous work includes: National Theatre of Scotland, National Youth Theatre, Donmar Warehouse.

Building on an accomplished and successful scratch of devised material in December we are now looking for a writer to work collaboratively; writing for the performance and incorporating supporting text which is written by the company. The piece, titled ‘After All This’ will explore what we feel is defining our generation, both good and bad. Trying to work out what our roles are as young adults, figuring out what has been inherited and working out what can be made our own. Our aim is to create a high-quality, thought-provoking, accessible performance relevant to all.

Eligibility:  Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Any previous experiencing of working with and/or writing for emerging artists and performers
  • Ability to work in a collaborative way and incorporate emerging artist’s ideas and opinions into a script
  • An interest in young adults and issues that affect them
  • The ability to represent young adults in a positive way through writing and challenging negative stereotypes

Dates:

  • The group meets every Wednesday evening:  5.20pm – 8.20pm from January 2015
  • Full day workshops will take place from 13th April – 16th April
  • Full day Dress rehearsal and tech on 24th April
  • Performance Dates: 24th and 25th April
  • NB: The writer would not be required for every workshop and rehearsal

Oval House 13-18s Drama group are looking for a writer to participate in an open and collaborative writing process for their next project January-March 2015.

The theme of the piece, titled ‘Who Decides?’ will be linked into the upcoming General Election; the process will explore politics in everyday life, young people’s opinions on current political issues and their feelings on voting.  Based on their experiences of growing up and living in London it will include their thoughts on the future of London and its people.  We hope to create a thought- provoking, accessible play that is relevant to young people’s lives.

The group are passionate about making theatre and have varying levels of experience. Through the process we will work to include their skills and performance interests.

Eligibility:  Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Any previous experiencing of working with and/or writing for young people
  • Ability to work in a collaborative way and incorporate young people’s ideas and opinions into a script
  • An interest in young people and issues that affect them
  • The ability to represent young people in a positive way through writing, challenging negative stereo-types

  • The group meets every Tuesday evening:  5.20pm – 7.20pm

Putney Arts Theatre seeking plays on ‘Crime and Punishment’ (£20 fee to join club if selected)

The Putney Arts Theatre New Writing Team is looking for fully formed pieces of drama relating to the theme ‘Crime and Punishment’ for our new writing production in October 2015.

What to submit:  Plays can be any genre (comedy, love story, ghost story, social or historical drama, musical etc.) as long as they relate to the ‘Crime and Punishment’ theme. They should have a maximum running time of 20 minutes and a maximum cast size of 4 actors.
“We are looking for well told stories that grab our attention from the start and introduce us to interesting characters who develop over time. Humorous, poignant, frightening, challenging, intriguing: take them and us on a dramatic journey.”

Eligibility:  They welcome entries (one script only please) from new and experienced writers who are:

  • Members of Putney Theatre Company and Group64
  • Non-members living in the UK

If your play is selected you will need to be a fully paid up member of the Company or a member of Group64 to have your play performed. PTC membership costs £20 per year – Telephone 0208 788 6943 or email info@putneyartstheatre.org.uk for a membership form.

They may ask writers of shortlisted scripts to develop further their plays before making a final selection in June 2015.

Festival of Dramaturgy on the Crisis PIIGS (Barcelona)

perpetuummobile and Nau Ivanow (Barcelona) have put a call out for the II Festival of Dramaturgy on the crisis PIIGS.

The goal of the festival is to propose the creation of five plays to five authors, born or resident in the countries members of the European Union. The subject of the plays will be the current economic, social and institutional European crisis from the point of view of each country.

Selected authors will be invited to attend the festival as writers in residence at Nau Ivanow and will be given a bilingual edition with all the participants’ plays. The organization do not cover travel expenses but will help with the formalities to get grants to cover this concept.

Eligibility:

  • The call is addressed exclusively to choose PLAYWRITERS born or resident in any of the countries members of the European Union.
  • Authors who have a minimum of three published plays may attend this call.
  • A total of five authors will be selected, from different countries.

  • A proposal of synopsis whose subject must be within the festival theme and must include a description of the characters and a sample of two pages of the play submitted.
  • The online registration form, all sections completed.
  • Only one proposal per author will be accepted for submission.

  • The plays will be written in the author’s native language and cannot be translations of other plays. They also cannot have been published, performed or awarded previously to this festival.
  • The maximum duration of the plays will be 60 minutes.

Blackwell House seeking class-style radio plays (15-45 min)

Backwell Playhouse will be presenting classic-style radio plays in 2015, which will be released as free podcasts shortly after recording. They are looking for plays that can be recorded in a radio style, with the ability to tell a story without visuals.

The plays will be recorded in front of a live studio audience – with the cast performing as many sound effects as possible live. Initially they will be recording 3-5 shows at a single performance.  However, should the recordings prove to be a success, they hope to record more in the future.

What to submit:  The plays can be of any length (although preference would be between 15-45mins long), and for any number of actors.  They can also be of any genre and style, from drama to comedy, noir to science fiction.  They are looking for a diverse collection of plays to present an interesting range for listeners and actors alike.

What you get:  Sadly, no payment can be made for the use of the plays.  However, the copyright for the play will remain with the writer who will be appropriately credited for the work in distribution.  Copyright for all other elements of the production, including distribution, will remain with the Playhouse.

Submissions Open For Blue Elephant Theatre 2015 Playwriting Competition

As part of its commitment to supporting emerging practitioners, the Blue Elephant announces that it is now receiving entries to its 2015 Playwriting Competition.

What you get:  The Blue Elephant will mount rehearsed readings of the winning entries this summer.

What to submit:  We are seeking new plays which have not been performed before. We prefer plays that embrace theatricality but are happy to receive naturalistic ones too. Plays should require no more than six actors and there are two categories:

  • Plays of between 45 and 90 minutes (there will be one winning play)
  • Plays of between 10 and 30 minutes (there will be two winning plays)

Playwrights may enter up to two plays, which should be emailed to submissions@blueelephanttheatre.co.uk.

Writers are invited to submit plays for the 2015 Arundel Festival Theatre Trail (£250 prize)

The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its fifteenth year. It performs at the end of August, on each of the Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel – this year, for example a community hall, a restaurant, a football club and Arundel Jailhouse. An audience of over 2,000 came to see the eight 2014 Theatre Trail plays.

The Trail is firmly established as one of the major components in the Festival and is a great showcase for both new and established writers.

What you get:  A reading committee will select the plays that will be performed, with the best submitted script receiving the Joy Goun award of £250 at the Theatre Trail launch in May 2015.  Each successful playwright will receive a £150 writer’s fee.

What to submit:  Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, with practicable casting, props and effects.  One play only per entrant, in hard copy (not e-mail). Please enclose an SAE if you’d like your play returned.

Story Friday with A Word In Your Ear (Bath) – Theme: Quilt of Stories

Story Fridays in March is on 13th March and the theme is Quilt of Stories.  Deadline for submissions is Monday 2nd March.

They are looking for writer-performers for each event.  Any story or monologue – fictional or factual – will be considered.  They are looking for a wide variety of stories for the evening.  They do not consider poetry.

What to submit:  Pieces should not be longer than 15 minutes when read out loud.  The maximum word count is 2,000 words.  However, there is no minimum – we are open to pieces of flash fiction as well as longer stories.

Writers need to be available to attend the event – the audience likes to meet you!  However, if you prefer not to read your own work we have two wonderful profession actors (Olly Langdon and Caroline Garland) who would be happy to read your piece for you.  Please indicate when you submit whether you would like to read, or to have your work read.

Ghost Dog productions seeking 10min plays for Playground – Theme: Survival

Ghost Dog Productions runs a regular new writing showcase called Playground. Once again they’re on the lookout for submissions of 10min plays based around various themes. Our next show dates and themes are:

23rd & 24th March – MIND GAMES
20th -22nd April – SURVIVAL

Deadlines are:

APRIL – 16/02/15

What to submit:  Please make sure your script comes with a title page which includes the name of the piece, the theme, your name and email address. No other rules other than consider the fact that it’s on a small stage in a tiny theatre with limited tech capabilities.
