Many Thoughts seeking screenwriter for feature film

Many Thoughts are looking for a screenwriter for comedy-thriller with minimum characters, locations and explosions. They need a drama-based action whose treatment can be adapted to guerrilla style filmmaking. An ideal story would be something that’s real-life with figments of imagination. A larger then life story but imagination limited to a handful of characters (young or old), dialogue, time and space.

The three important elements of the script should be a gun, a woman and a story around it ( I am sure there is someone out there who would understand what I mean). The story can be unconventional, non-linear, mix-medium, experimental but above all entertaining, interesting and must make sense.

This is an open call to anyone who wishes to collaborate, be it a writer, actor, technician to join the dream. The project will be expense paid only and they hope to collaborate with anyone who can enjoy with us creating indie cinema.

How to apply: Please send only a 2 to 5 page storyline or synopsis of the script that are registered under your name and is your original work.

Deadline: 4 September 2014

Scriptwriters required for online video

One Time Twice is urgently looking for a writer to turn an idea into an online-based branded/viral video for a tech corporation GradQuiz.

They need a short 60-90 second drama/humour/mystery script on a low budget. The writer must be able to work with no briefs but just notes and directions. The aim of this video is to create a visual communication that increases their brand visibility. The video will be used to build their already strong social media presence. So, your work will be seen by many students in the UK.

They don’t want to create a traditional advert, more a short film. You have creative freedom to bend the story as much as you like into any genre of your choice as long as it’s very compelling to the viewer.

This will be low pay but will lead to many more paid opportunities for the writer. They would love someone who has experience of writing commercials/branded videos but if you are a strong storyteller that’s good too.

How to apply: Click here to apply. They are asking for up to five pages of scripts.

Deadline: 7 September 2014 is the deadline posted, however, they are looking for writers for this particular project urgently. They often have un-paid/low paid opportunities for emerging writers so it’s worth sending your script in beyond the deadline to see if there is anything coming up.

IdeasTap/ HighTide masterclass on how to apply for Grants for the Arts Funding

Ok, so this one’s not strictly a ‘writing opportunity’,  but it could be useful if you’re considering producing your own work…

HighTide is giving up to 32 IdeasTap members the opportunity to attend a two-hour masterclass on how to apply for Grants for the Arts funding from the Arts Council. The session will be led by Steven Atkinson, Artistic Director of HighTide Festival Theatre, and Cassandra Mathers, Relationship Manager, Theatre for Arts Council England in the South East.

The masterclass will take place at HighTide’s offices in Farringdon, London on Wednesday 10 September from 10am to 12pm.

Steven and Cassandra will share and contrast their respective experiences with Grants for the Arts as an applicant and an assessor.

This session will be geared towards those with little or no experience of making funding applications to Arts Council England, but will also suit those who have applied before and been unsuccessful, or wish to develop their fundraising skills. Participants can be individual artists or artists representing companies from a range of live arts disciplines, including theatre, dance, music, producing, writers, directors and choreographers etc.

When applying, you should give the judges a clear sense of what work you would like to get Grants for the Arts funding for, and some articulation of how undertaking this work will develop your career and craft.

Terms and conditions

  1. You must be able to commit to the whole two hours.
  2. You can be at any stage of career.
  3. You must be willing to talk openly about your work and funding ambitions during the masterclass.
  4. See ideastap.com/briefterms for general terms and conditions that apply to all IdeasTap briefs.

National Trust at Knole accepting proposals for writing commission

“Imagine yourself stepping back in time more than 600 years as you travel through acres of vast deer-filled parkland.  Criss-cross through bracken-lined paths filled with wildlife and trees fallen and left to nature.  As you cross the brow of the hill, one of the country’s biggest homes emerges…Knole House”.

With a Heritage Lottery Funded Project to restore and revitalize Knole in full swing, there are monumental changes taking place at this treasured historic house, and a writing programme is being launched to celebrate and record these changes.

They’re  looking for a writing agency or a partnership of writers to deliver the first part of this project, which will take place 2014-2015.

This will be a central part of Knole’s community engagement and visitor plans, its overall aim being to connect and engage with our local audiences, share stories, reflections and ideas about Knole as a linchpin of the local community through the medium of writing. More specifically, the programme will:

  • Deepen relationships between priority audiences.
  • Gather and share contemporary views of Knole.
  • Respond to and raise awareness of Knole’s literary heritage.
  • Record and reflect on the changes at Knole.

The full brief contains outline of the proposed deliverable projects, and more info about the target audience. They have certain elements they would like incorporated, but the form in which this could come together has been purposely left open to interpretation, as they are keen for whoever heads this up to bring their own vision to Knole, and work with them to steer the project.

Application details:  This is the first commission which will run from 2014-2015; the fee will be c£20,000, to include all artists’ fees, management overheads, administration costs, materials and expenses. For the full brief and information on how to apply please contact– Alex Procter on alex.procter@antionaltrust.org.uk, or (from 1st September) Holly Millet on holly.millet@nationaltrust.org.uk

Behind the Bikeshed: accepting sketches inspired by the Beatles for London showcase

Behind The Bikeshed are a London based non-profit sketch collective. Off the back of their sell-out show in May, “Midnight in the Garden” they are now back with a new show for October and they want to showcase your sketches!

This time they are looking for any sketches inspired by any song of the Beatles, be it the title or the lyrics. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Magical mystery tour, Octopus’s garden, You can’t do that, While my guitar gently weeps, Yellow submarine, You like me too much, Three cool cats, Some other guy, She’s a woman, Please please me, Old brown shoe, Not guilty, The long and winding road, I’ll keep you satisfied, Do you want to know a secret, Day tripper…

… or probably just as easy for you to refer to this handy wikipedia list: – or even better, get listening to those old Beatles records of yours!

They are looking for sketches about 2-3 minutes long – please ensure the title of your sketch is also the title of the Beatles song that inspired it so!

How to apply: submit your sketches to info@behindthebikeshed.com  including in the subject line “Beatles Sketch”. They will let you know by Sunday 5th October 2014 if they are able to perform your sketch.

The show will be on at the Ophelia Theatre, 574 Kingsland Rd, Dalston, London, E8 4AH in October for 4 performances.

Unfortunately as they are non-profit and operate on a shoe-string they cannot pay you for your efforts, but will happily comp you a ticket and a free drink at the show.

For further details about Behind the Bikeshed and their past shows, please visit: www.behindthebikeshed.com and don’t hesitate to contact them with any questions.

Etch seeking submissions for scratch night at the Peckham Pelican

Etch holds a monthly theatre night held at one of South London’s most thriving new bars and arts venues, The Peckham Pelican. Etch aims to discover, nurture and support new writing whilst encouraging collaboration amongst emerging artists. We hope to provide a base and platform for development, collaboration and discussion whilst creating a fluid community of artists in need of an outlet. Etch will be sharing work at grass roots level, hoping to include curious audiences in the process of creating theatre.

Their launch night took place on the 11th August where five extracts of new writing were shown from five up and coming playwrights, directed and performed by hand picked directors and actors who have worked in such places as The Royal Court, The National Theatre, The Citizens theatre and The Apollo. The night was a huge success with a turnout of over 150 including guests from The Royal Court literary department.

How to apply: they are currently collecting submissions for their next scratch night on September 15th. If you are interested in being involved in Etch as a writer, please send 5-20 minute extracts from plays still in development to: submissions@etchtheatre.com

Please note that there is no fee for this project at the moment as all proceeds go towards the running of the event. However, Etch say that if and when they do make a profit, it will be shared amongst the team.
